NASPGHAN/NASPGHAN Foundation Summer Student Mentor Program
Purpose: To develop a program at multiple sites throughout the U.S. and Canada through which medical students can have 10-week research experiences under the mentorship of basic or clinical scientists with a research focus in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, or nutrition.
Candidates: Students in good standing at accredited medical schools in the U.S. and Canada who have completed their first year of medical training who seek to pursue a research experience between the first and second years of medical school. The deadline for application is March 15, 2013. Completed applications should be sent to the NASPGHAN National Office.
Mentors: M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D. members of NASPGHAN with a track record of independent peer-reviewed research, previous success with trainees (students, residents, or fellows), and a commitment to provide the necessary resources to make the experience meaningful for the student are eligible to serve as mentors. Mentors will apply for consideration with documentation of productivity (CV), grant support sufficient to support the research activities of the summer student, and previous experience with trainees. The Advisory Committee will approve all mentors.
Program: Each mentor will develop a program for the student that includes didactic training regarding study design, methods of data analysis, and ethics in research (e.g. human subject protection and animal subject protection). A minimum of 4 hours of didactic course work is required. The mentor should have scheduled meetings with the student to assess progress including an interim presentation of results at the midpoint of the studentship. The mentor/student are required to submit a brief (one page, single spaced) interim report of progress in July and a final report of accomplishments in September to the Advisory Committee.
Stipends of $4000 for at least a 10 week experience will be provided to each student. NASPGHAN/Foundation will support up to 3 students this year through this program.
