Coverage of Medical Foods
NASPGHAN Issue Brief - Pediatric Patient Access to Medical Foods - June 2012
Letter to Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) – Nov. 28, 2011
Letter to Secretary Sebelius - December 11, 2011
There is a need for consistent national coverage and reimbursement of foods for special dietary use by children with chronic diseases or conditions requiring special dietary intervention, including children with chronic gastrointestinal diseases, chronic serious liver disease, and chronic allergic syndromes. NASPGHAN is educating federal policymakers about the importance of this issue to the pediatric gastroenterology patient community and is focused on ensuring that medical foods be defined as “essential benefits” that would be offered by insurers in new state insurance exchanges established by the Patient Protectaion and Affordable Care Act of 2010.
