NASPGHAN is proud to recognize June as PRIDE Month and supports and acknowledges the contributions of our members in the LGBTQIA+ Community. Our society is committed to improving our diversity and providing equitable and inclusive programs and positions to all members.
LGBTQIA+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and the ‘+’ represents members of the community with gender and sexual identities the acronym may not yet fully describe. Research in 2015 shows as many as 15% of physicians identify as LGBTQIA+, but many don’t share this for various reasons, including a preference for privacy and concern about discrimination (1; 2). Persons in the LGBTQIA+ community continue to experience disparities in their own healthcare and professional lives. As anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation grows in our country, NASPGHAN aspires to be an ally in the fight for equality and inclusion.
NASPGHAN Statement in Support of All People in the LGBTQIA+ Community, their Families and Health Care Providers
NASPGHAN supports all members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their healthcare partners who work to provide high-quality, affirming care for their patients. We support legislation that seeks to eliminate disparities that are known to exist for those in the LGBTQIA+ community. We are committed to educating ourselves and our community to create safe spaces for our LGBTQIA+ colleagues and patients to feel comfortable sharing their whole selves.
