NASPGHAN Celebrates Jewish American Heritage Month

To recognize Jewish American Heritage Month, we want to highlight Dr. Sarah Lusman, a member of NASPGHAN who has made a significant impact in our field.

Current position and institution: Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Director of the Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program, and Director of Pediatric Fellowship Training, Columbia University Irving Medical Center
Favorite GI disease: cystic fibrosis
Hobbies: home organizing
Favorite vacation spot: All-time – Cape Cod.  Recent – Barbados
Book you recommend: Be Ready When the Luck Happens – a memoir by Ina Garten (aka the Barefoot Contessa, and a Jewish American)
Best career advice you have received: Be intentional in your choices.  Ask yourself why you’re doing something before you do it, and before you say yes or no to an opportunity.
What would you say to the other women in pediatric GI today?  This isn’t just for women but for everyone, especially those who work with trainees and junior faculty.  Be as honest and transparent as you can about what you’re balancing and struggling with.  When we pretend we have it all together, we set an impossible standard.  Letting others know that we aren’t perfect makes us true role models
