NASPGHAN has joined the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) in expressing serious concern about a recent vote of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
By a vote of 8–3, ACIP supported moving away from a universal recommendation for hepatitis B vaccination at birth, instead tying the birth dose to the documented hepatitis B status of the infant’s mother. Our societies believe this change would weaken a proven public health strategy and place infants at unnecessary risk.
