Hispanic-Latine/x Heritage recognition began in 1968, growing into a month-long celebration beginning September 15th, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations in many Latin American nations.
The 2020 U.S. census identified 62.1 (18.7%) million Hispanic and/or Latino people in the U.S. This was based on self-reports of those who identify as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or other Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin. Hispanic, Latino/a, Latinx and Latine are often used interchangeably to describe a very diverse population in America.
